UHS junior Kiara Powell is an avid bowler
Kiara is an excellent bowler. She is always working to better her performance on the lanes as well as go out of her way to help others working to improve. Kiara is the type of teammate who pushes others to strive to be their best and can put a smile on the team’s faces when we need it most. She is only a junior and I cannot wait to see what her senior year has in store for us.
— Coach Danielle Scheuermann
When did you first start bowling, and what interested you about the sport?
I started bowling in the 6th grade. My mom took up bowling after my father passed away and I wanted to learn something new so I decided to try it.
Can you share something about bowling that many people might not know or may find surprising?
Bowling is not as easy as people think it is. It takes a lot of focus and consistency.
Do you feel that bowling is not given as much recognition as other sports, and how do you plan on bringing more attention to the sport?
Well to me, I don’t think that people who do not bowl feel that bowling is an actual sport. How would I like to bring attention to the sport is to encourage people to come and watch to see what bowling is all about.
What are some of your hobbies, both in school and out of school?
The only hobby I have in school is bowling and I also enjoy helping
others. Outside of school I like to dance, listen to music and I also bowl
in two youth leagues at Jersey Lanes in Linden on Saturday mornings
and Showplace Lanes in Staten Island on Friday evenings.
What do you find most challenging about bowling, and what do you find most enjoyable?
The thing I find most challenging about bowling is the consistency. The thing I find most enjoyable about bowling is to one day bowl a perfect game which is a 300, and having an encouraging team.
If you could bowl anywhere in the world, where would you bowl?
Competition-wise I would like to bowl at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev. College-wise I would like to bowl for a Division 1 school.
What are some of the things on your life’s bucket list?
These could be anything!
On my life’s bucket list I would like to bowl with Kelly Kulick, who’s also an alumna of Union High School, Jason Belmonte and/or Pete Weber.
How would you describe your own personal style?
I would describe my personal style of bowling as dedicated.
As for myself: fun and laid-back.
What would some people be surprised to learn about you?
The one thing that people will be surprised about me is that I am
shy when I first meet new people.
